STAR of stage and screen Robert Powell gave a scintilating performance in Ramsbottom.

Both he and actress Helena Michell gave an evening's entertainment to a sold-out Theatre Royal, home of the Summerseat Players.

Robert is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Jesus in Zeffirelli's award-winning "Jesus of Nazareth", but over 30 years he has appeared in countless television series ranging from "Shaka Zulu" to "Hannay".

His most recent starring role is in the popular TV comedy "The Detectives".

Among his many film credits are the title role of Ken Russell's "Mahler", and a recent national tour of Kind Hearts and Coronets" brings his extensive theatrical biography up to date. Helena, who is the daughter of actor Keith Michell, appeared in the Merchant Ivory film "Maurice" and "The Deceivers" with her father, as well as TV episodes of "Miss Marple" and adaptations of Ruth Rendell and PD James works.

She has also appeared in "True Blue", "Bullet to Beijing" with Michael Caine, "Prick Up Your Ears" and "Beyond the Ocean" with Ben Gazarra.

Mrs Jean Taylor, secretary of the Summerseat Players, described last Friday's "Saints and Sinners" night of comedy, music and readings as "brilliant".

"It was quite an informal and friendly occasion," she said, adding that Robert was happy to chat with people afterwards.

The Players have recently played host to Hannah Gordon and Peter Barkworth, and anticipate holding further "evenings with the stars" at their theatre.
