THE founder of Preston Opera has hit the high note after completing a PhD in the operas of Verdi.

Retired university lecturer, Dr Frank Salter, 58, of Fulwood, won the prestigious qualification after taking a decade and a half to complete his research degree with the Open University (OU).

The life-long opera fan taught music at the University of Salford before retiring in 1997.

He formed the acclaimed Preston Opera group around 30 years ago and still remains a supporter of their recitals which include Donizetti's comic masterpiece, L'Elisir D'Amore, to be staged at the Charter Theatre, from April 14-17.

He said: "Although it was a hard course, I enjoyed doing the work because I adore opera. I would certainly recommend other people to take up a course with the Open University."

Other achievers include the head of technology at All Hallows High School, Penwortham, Michael Gornall, 38, of Hoghton Lane, Hoghton, who chalked up top marks and scooped an MAEd (Std).
