MR BANNER, how dare you suggest Leigh's war memorial be removed from its present site! (Journal Mailbox).

In its own remembrance garden it is the envy of most towns. It is a quiet haven where people can relax and where, each year, tributes are paid to the men and women who gave their lives for us in two world wars.

Now you come along and want to uproot the memorial and stick it on the Town Hall square. Why, Mr Banner?

I note your age, stated as 68. So you never served in the second world war, as you were too young.

I'm sure speculators would love to see this prime town centre site cleared to be sold off at no benefit to the town.

We have lost a lot of our heritage under the bulldozer.

And as for old people coming to live closer to the town centre, that is the last place any old person would want to be. They would never feel safe with rowdies, drunks and drug addicts around them.

Get your priorities right Mr Banner before you start to upset the proud people of Leigh - and wave your flag more carefully.
