Ruskin Park 17 Port Sunlight 10 DESPITE being two division below Ruskin, Port Sunlight produced a creditable performance.

The difference in the scoreline was the accurate goal kicking of winger Pilkington. It was obvious from the outset, that the visitors would attempt to play a forward-orientated game, while Ruskin would use whatever possession they could win, to release their skilful three-quarter line.

This often makes for an interesting clash of styles, but sometimes, if the side with the larger pack dominates for long periods, as happened in this game, it can produce a dire war of attrition.

Sunlight were first on the board within five minutes, when the pack gained a pushover try credited to Metcalfe, from a five-metre scrum. For the rest of the half, however, Ruskin more than held their own, and were soon in the lead when neat passing put first Ben Mousley and then debutant Chris Griffin over for tries. Pilkington converted both, and then added a penalty when opposing skipper Ward strayed offside, to give his side a healthy 12-point lead at half time.

In a low key second half, the visitors' pack began to dominate and Ruskin were denied possession for long periods. A second pushover try by Metcalfe was all Sunlight could manage, however, despite going close on a couple of occasions, and Ruskin held on for a much-needed victory.
