DANISH striker Jon Tveen Jensen will line up for the Clarets reserves at Port Vale tonight as Burnley boss Stan Ternent checks him out as a potential transfer target.

The 24-year-old forward from Danish Super League club Viborg will lead the Burnley attack in the Pontins League clash.

And Ternent will decide whether the player, known as a strong, target-man type, is worth pursuing.

Jensen, who scored 11 goals in 25 games for Viborg last season, is thought to be keen on a move to England and and will be out of contract in the summer.

"I would like to try it and see how it is," he said.

The Dane will be joined in the reserves by Steve Morgan, Mark Ford and Phil Eastwood and Jensen's fellow Scandinavians Rune Vindheim and Frank Kval as Burnley look for the points they need to stay in the First Division.

It's a double relegation battle at Turf Moor but Burnley will approach Saturday's Nationwide Second Division game at Wrexham in optimistic mood after their improved showing in Sunday's derby defeat by Preston.

And Ternent admitted that was the standard Burnley must maintain to win their fight to stay up - with a bit of luck thrown in. "Saturday will be the acid test to see if we can perform like that again. You need a little rub of the green but if we keep going like that we will be alright," he said.

There were encouraging debuts against Preston for Paul Cook and Tom Cowan, who will be a free agent in the summer and who will have between now and the end of the season to stake a claim for a possible permanent move.

"If he does well we'll take him, if he doesn't we won't," said Ternent.

However, Burnley do have injury worries ahead of the trip to Wrexham, one of seven away games in their last 11 fixtures.

Central defender Brian Reid missed the Preston game with a knee injury he sustained against Manchester City and is undergoing treatment.

And skipper Gordon Armstrong also picked up a thigh knock on Sunday which will require a check towards the end of the week.

Turf Moor is expected to feature in tonight's BBC documentary Football Millionaires. Presenter Alan Hansen interviewed former Manchester United and Northern Ireland international Norman Whiteside for the programme when Whiteside was doing some part-time work as a chiropodist for the Clarets.

Meanwhile, Alan Little has been sacked as manager of York City, ending his 11-season association at Bootham Crescent.

The decision was taken at a board meeting last night with the Minstermen placed two places and two points above Burnley, having plummeted down the table since the turn of the year.

Little, brother of Stoke boss Brian, was appointed manager in March 1993 after serving as assistant to both John Bird and John Ward.

York secretary Keith Usher said: "Alan was made aware of our decision by the chairman last night. Action was felt necessary after our recent run and action was taken."

Player-coach Neil Thompson has been named as caretaker manager.
