DANISH striker Jon Tveen Jensen may remain on Stan Ternent's long-term shopping list after creating a good impression on his first outing in a Clarets shirt.

But Oldham have also thrown their hat into the ring as they look for a goal-scorer to bolster their relegation fight.

Jensen booked in for training at Boundary Park today as Latics boss Andy Ritchie checks out the player for a couple of days before he returns to Denmark this weekend.

Ternent hasn't ruled out the prospect of Jensen figuring in Burnley's reserves again this season after he played for the club's second string in their Pontins League win at Port Vale on Tuesday night.

But any possible permanent move to Turf Moor for the 24-year-old Viborg striker may have to wait until the Burnley boss has had the chance to take a longer look.

"He didn't do badly. I could do with getting him in for pre-season and getting him fully fit would be the best way of putting it. But we will keep tabs on him," said Ternent.

Danish football is just getting back into action after its mid-winter break and Jensen, who is keen on a move to England, is expected to return to complete the domestic Super League season before his contract expires in the summer. Jensen was never likely to help ease Burnley's current goal shortage with the onus remaining on Andy Payton and a supporting cast.

Ternent would have no worries if Ronnie Jepson and Andy Cooke were available.

But with a return for Jepson still looking at least a week away then Graham Branch and Glen Little may have to help out Payton again at Wrexham on Saturday when the Clarets will be looking for their first goal in four games.

The Burnley boss also has injury concerns elsewhere with Brian Reid (knee) and Gordon Armstrong (thigh) requiring late checks.

However, new arrivals Paul Cook and Tom Cowan have provided a tonic and Ternent has converted Cowan's loan into a deal until the end of the season, formally taking over the remaining couple of months of the defender's contract from Huddersfield with no fee involved.

Burnley's Lancashire League fixture at home to Macclesfield Reserves originally scheduled for tomorrow will be played at Gawthorpe on Saturday morning, kick-off 11am.

Second Division promotion-chasers Manchester City are set to bolster their strikeforce by signing want-away Dundee United front-man Alex Mathie.

The former Ipswich and Newcastle forward has endured a miserable time since arriving at Tannadice Park and Tangerines boss Paul Sturrock is looking to cut his losses.

But with City still in financial strife, Sturrock may be forced into a player-exchange deal.

Mark Winstanley has been released by Burnley and played for Preston North End at Leeds United in the Pontins League Premier Division on Tuesday night.

Winstanley helped North End through some injury problems and took the place earmarked in the Preston side by player-manager David Moyes, who was on a scouting mission.

"Mark came in and filled in for us," confirmed Moyes. "He has been paid up by Burnley and lives quite locally and it was just a question of making up the numbers.

"There's nothing more than that at the moment."

Winstanley, recently wanted on loan by Rotherham, still had over a year of his contract to run at Burnley.

But with no prospect of regaining a first-team place the two parties have come to an agreement over the remainder of his deal and Winstanley, who joined the Clarets five years ago, is now free to join another club.
