BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent is looking for another away-day special at Wrexham tomorrow with the Clarets relegation battle needing to be won on foreign fields.

And despite one or two injury worries, Ternent is likely to rely on the core of players that went so close to stopping the rot against Preston last Sunday to deliver a first win in eight games.

Ternent was linked in the national Press today with a loan enquiry about Leeds United striker Derek Lilley.

But that was a non-starter with Ternent saying the former Greenock Morton goalscorer, a one-time team-mate of Clarets defender Brian Reid, was not a particular target.

"I have asked about a lot of players and I am asking all the time. But I haven't chased anybody this week," he said.

With seven of Burnley's remaining 11 games away from home, they are likely to need to glean the bulk of the points they need to stay up on the road.

But with their recent away record of two wins and two draws in their last five games significantly better than their home one, that shouldn't have too much bearing on Burnley's prospects.

"We will have to win away from home but that doesn't worry me at all.

"And I wouldn't have thought it would worry the lads. They should be okay," Ternent insisted.

And leading scorer Andy Payton echoed that view.

"The home record has been so bad. We have done better away from home so hopefully we can make that count.

"Everybody's talking about five wins so we've got to start somewhere," said Payton. The formation Burnley used against Preston last Sunday will also lend itself to playing away from home with plenty of players able to get behind the ball and wide men Glen Little and Graham Branch given a licence to support lone striker Payton.

Recent history is also on Burnley's side as they strive to get off the 34-point mark where they have been marooned for four games and which has left them in the bottom four.

The Clarets haven't conceded a goal at the Racecourse Ground in their last three League visits and have lost just once in six games.

"Let's hope that continues. It would be handy tomorrow," Ternent admitted.

New signing Tom Cowan will be hoping for better luck against the 12th-placed Welshmen than he enjoyed the last time he faced them.

Cowan broke a jaw while playing for Huddersfield in an FA Cup tie in January and his subsequent lack of games played a part in his move to Burnley until the end of the season. The Cup was also unkind to Paul Cook who is still working his way back to full match fitness after a sending off in the competition with Stockport forced him onto the sidelines and out of Gary Megson's plans.

"I played a couple of first-team games and a reserve game in the best part of seven weeks which is nowhere near enough. "So I will have to work on my fitness and hopefully get better each game," said the on-loan midfielder who nevertheless added signficantly to Burnley's midfield on his debut and will be a key figure for the Clarets tomorrow.

Ternent, without the banned Lenny Johnrose for the last time, delayed naming his squad until after training today.

Gordon Armstrong has been under treatment for a thigh strain and Reid will also have a check on his knee injury to see whether he has a chance of forcing his way back into the side.
