CHILD FC retained the St Helens Combination's Garswood Trophies Hospital Cup Final on Good Friday after a game that came to life only in the final 10 minutes.

The game kicked off 10 minutes late and was a largely dour affair.

Three minutes into the second half Child took the lead when Child's Paul Burke was brought down in the area and Gary Moore rifled home the penalty.

But even this failed to raise the game and it wasn't until Steve Clarke's great individual goal that the game came to life.

Tommy Baker's fine crossfield pass sent Clarke clear and he rounded the 'keeper to roll the ball into an empty net.

Rainford replied when Dave Rawsthorne latched onto a hard-hit cross to set up a dramatic last 10 minutes that saw Child hold on to the trophy.

League president Bert Rawsthorne presented the trophy.

Saturday saw more joy for Child as their reserve side claimed a place in the final of the Rainford Potteries Cup after victory over Pilkington A.

They now meet Billinge Reserves in the final which is expected to be played at Ruskin Drive on Friday, April 30 (6.30).

Meanwhile, next Thursday (April 15) the Anchor defend their Liverpool CFA Intermediate Cup crown when they take on Tapes For Industry FC at the Liverpool Nalgo ground (6.30).

THE Combination's best wishes go to Rainford North End secretary Bob Glover and his brother Bert, a lifelong stalwart of the club, who is seriously ill in Ormskirk General Hospital.

HOME clubs are asked to ring in their results to David Watkins this Saturday on 756806. Eric Bond is unavailable. RESULTS
