INDEPENDENT Green Party candidate Peter Hartley is aiming to break the mould of traditional politics on Pendle Council by winning a seat in Colne.

Mr Hartley, of Birtwistle Avenue, Colne, is standing against Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat opponents in the town's Vivary Bridge ward in the only four-way battle in the borough on May 6.

Liberal councillor Doreen Gwynne is standing down from the ward. She is one of four retiring members, the others being fellow Liberal Margaret Sharples (Craven), and Labour's Tony Leo (Southfield) and Cyril Hughes (Walverden).

The council is currently made up of Liberals 30, Labour 17, Conservative 3 and one independent. Of the 17 seats up for grabs, 12 are being defended by Liberals and five by Labour.
