I LIVED and worked in Bury for many years before emigrating to Canada in 1977. The Bury Times was my favourite newspaper and I still read it on the Internet.

I am writing about my dad, Stan Cowell, who lives in Whitefield and is currently in Christie Hospital Manchester being treated for cancer. Dad is 83 in May and has worked hard all his life, always giving and never asking for anything. He is a good husband to mum and a good dad to me. I am what I am today because of what he taught me: strong values, good manners, respect for others and never ask anyone to do what you would not do yourself.

He was four years in Burma in the Second World War fighting for us and now he is fighting for his own life.

I know mum and dad read the Bury Times and we would just like to say to dad that we love you very much and are thinking of you always.
