WRESTLING hero Davey Boy Smith has been told he will never walk again after breaking his back in the ring.

The 35-year-old star emigrated from Golborne to Canada and then America in the 1980s and became a favourite with wrestling fans around the world.

Known as "The British Bulldog", Davey Boy - who has made millions from the sport - broke his back during a fight last autumn but did not seek medical help straight away.

Now doctors who are treating him in the intensive care unit of a Calgary hospital have told him he has an infection affecting his spine and he will not walk again.

The father-of-two, who weighs 20 stone, still has family living in Golborne.

Davey Boy had always wanted to be a wrestler and used to train at the gym after finishing lessons at Golborne Comprehensive School.

His career reached a high four years ago when he became WWF Intercontinental champion at Wembley in front of more than 80,000 fans.

As a teenager he turned semi-professional and his father used to drive him to contests around the country.

Since being injured, Davey Boy's mother has died. His sister Tracey, aged 27, has died from cancer.
