A GO-getting young deaf student at the University of Central Lancashire has been commended by the Prime Minister for his "encouraging work for deaf people".

Asif Iqbal wrote to the Prime Minister telling him of the work he has done to encourage people to learn British Sign Language.

And a letter beck from Tony Blair congratulated him on his work and wished him every success in the future.

Asif, studying deaf studies and education, recently visited West Ham Football Club and met one of his heroes - Ian Wright, pictured.

Asif said: "Ian is a great personality and an excellent role model.

"The chief executive of the club arranged for me to visit the club's training ground, meet the players and watch them train."

And that's not all. Asif also met actress and writer Meera Syal, star of the award-winning comedy show Goodness Gracious Me, at the end of last year.

Asif accompanied Meera to the filming of Light Lunch, where he watched hosts Mel and Sue interview her.

After the show, the pair were more than happy to let Asif show them some sign language.

He added: "I will complete my studies and hopefully graduate in three months time.

"I would like to work in television and now have the support of a few famous names!"
