ONE of East Lancashire's major employers, Castle Cement, is about to come under new ownership after a deal with a German firm.

Scancem, parent company of the Clitheroe site which employs around 400, is being sold to Heidelberger Zement following months of speculation.

The German firm will become the third largest cement producer in the world.

"We have a supportive new owner with considerable resources and a high degree of expertise in cement manufacturing," said Castle Cement's managing director Michael Lodge.

Brian Turner, chairman of the shop stewards' committee, today said: unions were looking forward to meeting the new owners."We don't really see any downside to this at the moment. We are owned by a Swedish firm so being taken over by a German firm probably won't much difference to the workforce here."
