BURNLEY MP Peter Pike is calling for a public inquiry into the death of baby Jack Shackleton.

Sixteen-month-old Jack Andrew, of Bar Street, Burnley, was found to be dead on arrival at Burnley General Hospital on April 17.

Mr Pike said he would be asking the Secretary of State for Health, Frank Dobson, for an inquiry into the case.

He said: "This tragedy should not have occurred.

"I am in no way apportioning blame but we need somebody totally neutral to look into the whole background of the case."

The inquest into the death of Jack was opened in Burnley last Friday. Home Office pathologist Dr John Rutherford, who carried out a post mortem examination, said Jack died from a head injury. He also suffered abdominal injuries which could have proved fatal.

Jack was the son of Glen and Georgina Shackleton, of Bar Street, Burnley. Mr Shackleton, 27, has been charged with the baby's murder.
