FROM bobs to bobbies - it's all in a days work for one Lancaster mother.

When Sue Kirby-Parkinson isn't busy creating the latest styles as a mobile hairdresser she's pounding the beat as a special constable.

And with 17 years experience under her belt, she's now been given the special task of co-ordinating the county's 500 dedicated officers who devote their own time to work alongside the constabulary's regular bobbies.

"It's a great honour for me to have been appointed to this new role," said Sue, who is married with two grown up children.

"We've a fine group of men and women who give us their time and efforts to serve the public of Lancashire. We're now working much more closely with our regular colleagues and its been good to see younger men and women join up over the last few years. Specials give them an opportunity to put something back into the community and play their part in making the people of Lancashire feel safer and reassured."

Sue, 48, started her specials career in Carnforth 17 years ago and is the first woman in Lancashire to hold the important co-ordinator post. Her new role will make her responsible for all aspects of specials work, from recruitment advice to management and training issues.

Added Sue: "It's been good to see how the Chief Constable and her team team have given the specials a much more proactive role in policing. The current issues of the Crime and Disorder Bill will mean a concerted effort from the force to improve the quality of life for all and we're ready and waiting to play our part in meeting the challenges before us."
