TONY Fargin's mid-season's return to the Child FC fold proved a priceless signing.

For despite being hampered by knee trouble, he stood out as man of the match in Friday's St Helens Combination Rainford Potteries Cup Final.

In a great display, he cracked home four goals to help Child Reserved lift the trophy at the expense of plucky Division Three outfit Billinge Reserves. Alan Hughes added the other goal in a 5-2 win.

Billinge actually took the lead after only eight minutes through Paul Farrell, but two minutes later, Fargin equalised. The next goal came five minutes into the second half through Hughes.

But five minutes later Chris Walsh put Billinge level and this it stayed throughout the 90 minutes. Three minutes into extra time - the ever dangerous Fargin, latched onto a through ball, and Child led 3-2.

Billinge never gave up and several chances came their way but these were thwarted by excellent keeping by Andy Foster. Gradually, however, the Division One champions) gained the upper hand and Fargin grabbed his hat-trick in the second period of extra time then cracked home his fourth and Child's fifth a minute before full time to complete his day,s glory. Nevertheless full marks to Billinge Reserves, who received from President Bert Rawsthorne not only their losing finalists medals for the day, but their Division Three runners-up trophies as well. Besides the Rainford Potteries Cup and medals, the president also presented Child with the Cottington-Taylor Cup for the Division One Championship and the associate trophies, so both clubs had a grand evening.

Congratulations, too, go to Gerard Arms Reserves who have captured the Division Three championship after a great season.

Saturday was not a happy day for Bury outfit MRG Landscapes, whose journey to Widnes to face Chestnut Lodge (Division One) in the Northern Cup Semi final came to nought as they were humbled and beaten 4-2. Chestnut Lodge will now play in the final, (opponents unknown yet) at Witton Albions ground this Saturday kick off 3pm.

In Division One Sidac Social and College Street thrashed out a 2-2 stalemate. In Division Two, the young Agrevo outfit ended a hectic season with an 8-5 beating of Nutgrove, Andy Johnson hitting four of these for Agrevo. Earlestown (Griffin) just had the edge over Pilkington A winning at home 4-2 while in Division Three North End Reserves upset East Sutton Labour Reserves 3-2.

On Sunday Ex-Services (Rainhill) clinched the Sunday Premier Division by beating East Sutton Labour 5-3 at Parr Stocks. Rose and Crown excelled themselves with a 3-1 win over Oddfellows. RESULTS
