A SERIES of car crashes along a short stretch of busy road have left locals fearing for their lives.

Concerned highways experts are now looking at ways of cutting hazards in Tyldesley Road, Hindsford where cars have regularly careered in to the front gardens of a terraced row of homes.

Worried resident Anne Dowds claimed a neighbour had recorded six separate smashes and, in recent weeks, a hat-trick of crashes on the Atherton side of the Shakerley Road junction.

Last week a car spun off the road, shot across the footpath and demolished a concrete and panel fence in front of a neighbouring house.

"Something needs doing quickly before someone is killed," said Anne.

"My son had been waiting there for a taxi. I dread to think what would have happened if he'd been there when the crash happened.

"Cars are going too fast on this stretch. Alterations to the road bend has speeded-up traffic. We need safety barriers in front of our homes."

Now Hindsford councillors Bill and Evelyne Smith, pictured with Mrs Dowds, have backed locals' safety fight.

Cllr Mrs Smith told The Journal: "We share the residents' concerns. Schoolchildren regularly use this route and the consequences of a schooltime accident don't bear thinking about.

"Highways experts are looking at ways of reducing the risks. Something needs to be done." 264/131/9
