LEIGH skipper Craig Dean will not play again this season.

The influential scrum-half goes into hospital tomorrow for an immediate ankle reconstruction operation and will not figure again until next year.

And that is a cruel blow for coach Ian Millward who made Dean his first major signing. "It's heartbreaking to lose such a key player at such an early stage of the season," he said.

"We have obviously known for sometime Craig's ankle has been dodgy, but it was only late last week the specialist decided the surgery was the only option. We have to move quickly in the best interests of the player and the club.

"Although we have coped reasonably well with his absence so far, it's clear we'll miss a player of his talents.

"When you are playing the better teams he can provide that extra gear, the difference between winning and losing a tight game.

"I've spoken to Craig and he's absolutely devastated; he feels he hasn't made any contribution at all this season."

Millward was dealt another injury blow when young utility back Radney Bowker was ruled out for 4-6 weeks.

Bowker damaged ankle ligaments in Leigh's last win at Swinton, and, while X-rays showed no lasting damage, he faces a long rehabilitation programme.

After being given last week off, it was back down to business on Tuesday as the senior squad report back for training.

"They'd worked hard during the first third of the season and fully deserved their break," added Millward. "I'm expecting them to come back totally refreshed and ready for some more hard work."

Leigh will be firm favourites to keep up the pressure on leaders Hull KR when they tackle Workington at Hilton Park on Sunday.
