LEIGH'S former professional golfer Norman Sutton has died. He was 91.

A quality player and pro at Leigh Golf Club, he qualified for the Dunlop Masters for a record 12 successive years - a feat unlikely ever to be bettered.

Norman amassed a tremendous list of honours in his time on the circuit.

He was Northern Champion in 1946 and 1951; he won the Penfold in 1946 and again in 1950, when he also won the Oaks.

In 1951 Norman was a magnificent sixth in the British Open, for which he received the princely sum of £68 - plus the odd few shillings!

A year later he was fourth in the Dunlop Masters; in 1953 was third in the Yorkshire Evening News event; 1954 saw him reach the semi-finals of the Penfold and the News of the World; in 1955 he was a Ryder Cup nominee and was Devon champion, a title he retained the next year.

In 1958 Norman was the world seniors champion.
