A WOMAN was cut from the wreckage of a car after her husband is believed to have suffered a stroke at the wheel.

Doris Standish, 51, was travelling along Chapel Street, Leigh, with her husband James on Saturday when the crash happened.

The car, driven by 52-year-old Mr Standish, ploughed into the Foundry Arms pub at 10am.

He was freed from the car but his wife was trapped by her legs.

It is understood she suffered a deep cut to her left leg as well as cuts to her head.

Paramedics stabilised her at the scene before firefighters from Leigh used specialised hydraulic cutting equipment to free her.

Sue Greensmith, girlfriend of the landlord, was in the pub when the car smashed into the gable end of the building, dislodging some bricks.

"I heard an almighty bang and when I looked out of the window I saw a woman with blood pouring from her head," she said.

"Her husband was more concerned about her than himself. I took a wet tea towel out and my friend used it to put it on the lady's head wound.

"I just feel really sorry for them both and I will be calling the hospital to see how they are."

Both Mr and Mrs Standish, of Marshall Street, Leigh, were taken to Wigan Infirmary for treatment.
