MICHAEL Bamber reckons he's tied the knot more than 10,000 times - but he's only said 'I do' once!

Despite having heard those immortal words thousands of times, Michael has been the one doing the asking - as a superintendent at Preston Register Office.

But 62-year-old Michael's marrying days are soon to be over, as he prepares to retire next month.

Michael, whose first wedding was in 1961, has worked at Preston Register Office, in Guild Hall Street, for more than 20 years.

In that time he has united more than 10,000 couples, in many different situations.

He said: "I have married people from all walks of life, in very unusual ceremonies.

"And I have conducted weddings in many different locations - including Preston Prison!"

But Michael, from Fulwood, says the most poignant ceremonies he has conducted are not as merry as most.

He added: "The ones which stick in my mind are the death-bed weddings, because they are emotionally draining and you can't help but get involved with the couple."

But now the only joining he wants to do is with local sports and pastime clubs!

He said: "My neighbour's already tried to sign me up for the bowling club, but I've decided not to commit myself too soon.

"The first thing I'll be doing after I retire is go on holiday with my wife, who has also just retired."
