SIR, - IT would appear that a good deal of misinformation is being spread about the Poulton supermarket proposals (Citizen, May 6).

First, it cannot be a case of saying 'no' to all supermarkets.

It could be argued that following the closure of Kwik Save, Poulton could stand a medium-sized store.

To merely reject all suggestions would lead to the council being slaughtered in any planning appeal.

Secondly, the local plan has to make provision for a supermarket site.

Indeed, the previous administration stipulated that it was preferable for any new supermarket site to be in the town centre and only if this could not be achieved would other sites (ie out of town) be considered.

It was in that context that I welcomed the ongoing discussions about the Teanlowe site as an alternative to the Station Road proposal.

The letter from Mrs Rich (Citizen, May 6) implies that a concrete carbuncle is planned.

She must have psychic powers because no plans have yet been drawn and in the same edition Councillor Hawley would have you believe that a second, third and fourth floors of car parking could be added at the stroke of a pen.

Any engineer will tell you that is not so. Foundations of sufficient strength would have to be laid right from the start and would be shown on the plans submitted.

Councillor Hawley may build his scare stories without any foundation, but builders rarely do.

As a past member of the planning committee, he should know that any development would be subject to strict planning control and the site is owned by Wyre Borough Council which will have the final say in the size of what is built or not.

Councillor Geoff Horrocks,

Garstang Road West,

Poulton.
