THE head of family firm of undertakers collapsed at the wheel of a hearse carrying a coffin as he drove to a funeral.

The hearse - which then collided with a parked car - was being driven by Norman Alty, 68, of Alty Funeral Service, Witton, Blackburn, in Pleckgate Road, Blackburn, shortly before 1pm yesterday.

Mr Alty was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary where his condition was today described as 'comfortable'.

A replacement hearse was at the scene within minutes.

Mr Alty's son, David, who is also involved in the undertaking business - set up in Broomfield Place more than 85 years ago - went to the scene after hearing about the accident.

He said: "He was taken ill at the wheel en-route to a funeral.

"Only the car was damaged and a replacement hearse was sent immediately."
