I NOTE (LET, May 4) that the Darwen Library Theatre is to be re-named. As a former member of the Darwen Arts Council and of the Darwen Library Players, I ask why Darwen with Blackburn Council can't just leave it alone.

To my knowledge, it's been the 'Library Theatre' for the past 30 years and, let's be honest, do Darreners really want it to change? It will be just another example of taking away the identity of the old Borough of Darwen.

If it really must change, then, how about the 'James Lewis Reilly Theatre,' named after one of Darwen's most prolific artists.

Jim was responsible for many of the events that took place in the theatre during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, along with his colleagues at the Darwen Arts Council and Library Players.

This name seems as good as any and, after all, we do have 'Hardman Way' after ex-councillor Tom Hardman.

But, as Peter Lee Cooper stated (Letters, May 14) just leave it be. The old saying is: "If it ain't broken, then don't mend it." Enough said.
