A SUPERMARKET has dismissed rumours that it is shedding staff at one of its East Lancashire stores.

Rumours that Sainsbury's in Clitheroe was about to close or turn into a HomeBase outlet have also been refuted by supermarket bosses. Sainsbury's opened a £1million new store in the town in February with the creation of more than 100 full and part-time jobs. But rumours have been rife that the store was shedding staff and about to be turned into a DIY shop.

Shane Inger, retail marketing manager for Sainsbury's, said the rumours were "just not true."

"Sainbury's in Clitheroe is here to stay.

"We invested a lot of money in the store.

"We are hardly going to spend £1million building it and training staff just to close it down and lay them off.

"The company has recently undergone a restructure to make it more dynamic, focused and streamlined.

"But the store in Clitheroe is doing very well and we certainly aren't closing it," he said.

"If anything we are giving our staff in Clitheroe more hours," he said.

Rumours that the Sainsbury's in Darwen was about to close were also recently refuted by the firm.
