A PRIZE of £20,000 is on offer for the first individual runner who beats the leading horse home in the Man versus Horse Marathon. The 22 mile off road challenge covering farm tracks, forestry paths and open moorland takes place this Saturday at Llanwrtyd, Powys in Mid-Wales.

No individual has beaten the first horse in any of the 19 previous races, the nearest was in 1982 when Paul Brownson finished just four minutes behind. Sponsor William Hill is offering odds of 20-1 for a man to win.

Relay teams can now attempt to beat the thoroughbreds, and amongst them will be five teams from Blackburn Road Runners. Last year, Lynda Mason, Brenda Fullard and Christine Hamilton were the winning ladies team, and Anne Harwood Madeline Haworth and Freda Southworth were third. All will go again this year although Lisa Richardson replaces Lynda who this year runs with Eileen Peat and Elaine Kemp. Cathy Jefferies, Norma Smith and Irene Sziler are the Road Runners fourth ladies team and there is a men's veteran team of Ray Moulding, Brian Shaw and Adrian Batson.
