COUNCILLORS have backed local residents by refusing a planning application to convert two properties into 11 bedrooms at The Coach House, Rosehill Avenue, Burnley.

A petition by 19 residents of Rosehill Avenue was received objecting to the commercialisation of the dwellings.

Two ward councillors also made strong objections to the intrusion of a commercial adventure into a residential area.

Officers recommended approval saying the expansion and upgrading of existing tourist facilities must be balanced with the Local Plan to protect the character and environment of existing residential areas. The hotel has 24 bedrooms catering for both business people and tourists. Officers felt the proposal would not increase the level of disturbance to nearby residents.

They agreed occasional complaints had been received about noise at weekend functions.

Councillors at the development control and highways sub-committee overturned the recommendation and refused the application.
