LANCASTER City Swimming and Water Polo Club hosted a huge successful event on Friday.

Their summer club gala at Salt Ayre Sports Centre had no fewer than 75 clubs taking part.

The event also staged the annual Lancaster and District Primary School Invitation Relays. In total there were 55 events and a full house of noisy spectators.

Starting the gala there were wins in the beginners' class for G.Robertson (girls) and J.Cavaliere (boys) both winning the Frontcrawl, Rebecca Wolfenden (backstroke) and Lucinda Wannop (breaststroke) all the girls picking up gold medals. The boys eight years and under was dominated by Oliver Wilkinson who took all three gold medals showing good prospects for the future.

The very competitive nine and ten year olds category was won by Rebecca Benson in Frontcrawl and breaststroke while Jenny Westworth took gold in both the butterfly and backstroke. The boys were up against James Wannop a strong young swimmer who took gold's in frontcrawl, backstroke, and breaststroke only to be stopped from winning all four medals by a brilliant swim from Alex Hargreaves who worked hard to take gold in the Butterfly event.

The 11 and 12 year olds were dominated by girls Nicola Green and Lucy Pinnington who came away with a bag full of medals with both girls setting new club records. The boys were out paced by Seb Brindley who took gold medals in all four competitive strokes.

The 14 year old age groups had good swims from Faye Winder winning the girls 2 length butterfly. Thomas Curwen took gold medals in all four strokes, setting two Torch Trophy records in the 50 metres butterfly 38.73 seconds, followed with a record time of 40.52 seconds in the 50 metres breaststroke.
