BOB Lord was a dominating and influential personality in the prosperous years of Burnley FC and it was right that he had a stand named after him.

But arguably there was an even more significant figure at Turf Moor in those halcyon days, and that was Jimmy McIlroy.

So it was with great delight that I read in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph that the East Stand would be named after a man who was a legend in his own time.

The board of directors must be congratulated in their action to name the stand after one of the world's greatest players.

Jimmy McIlroy was ignominiously transferred against his wishes at the height of his career but now a wrong has been righted.

The favourite headline used to be "Mac the Knife" as the Northern Ireland international carved open the opposition defences. What would he be worth today? Anyone's guess, but certainly £10 million plus.

Those who saw him can never forget the skilful way he shielded the ball and weaved his way to the goal-line to centre for others to tap the ball into the net. The Jimmy McIlroy Stand will be an inspiration to supporters and players alike. Well done Mr Kilby.
