COUNCILLORS are also able to claim allowances and expenses if they are members of the police, fire and transport authorities.

The Police Authority are not obliged by statute to reveal payments. But chairman Stephen Murphy is entitled to claim up to an £8,000 allowance, plus travel and subsistance.

The GM Fire Authority allowances will be released next week. But the last figures available (1997-98) show chairman Fred Walker from Bedford/Astley Ward claiming £16,930 with members John Lea £766 and Barry Hampson £1,013.

At the GMPTE, Atherton chairman Joe Clarke is entitled to claim £12,650 special responsibility allowance for the next 12 months, while members Stephen Hellier, Brian Thomas and John Hilton (Aspull/Standish) can claim a basic allowance of £910.80 each. Plus they can claim additional attendance allowances and travel expenses for meetings.

And Social Services chairman Alan Stephenson receives a £15,000 honorarium as chairman of the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service Trust.
