WET and windy weather didn't stop 200 cyclists getting on their bikes for a tour of the Ribble Valley in aid of St Catherine's Hospice.

Although it rained non-stop all day, many of the brave riders opted for the 55-mile circuit of Bleasdale, while others settled for less ambitious routes round the Trough of Bowland and Chipping.

Either way it was no mean feat for the cyclists, who set off from Preston College, in Fulwood, on Sunday morning.

John Nickson, appeals officer for the Lostock Hall Hospice, applauded their efforts. He said: "We were very, very unlucky with the weather on the day. Although they got soaked to the skin, we are very grateful to each and everyone of them for taking part."

He also praised the marshals and members of the Ribble Valley Cycle Club, which helped organise the event. "It was a tremendous effort on their part," he said.

The ride usually raises between £8,000 and £10,000 for the hospice, which relies entirely on donations to stay open. It won't be known how much this year's event has raised until all the money is collected. John said: "We still hope to raise quite a few thousand pounds."

The Cheshire Building Society and Preston College also supported the event and anyone who did not take part but would like to make a donation should call the appeals office on (01772) 324540.
