GREEN Transport Month sloshed into St Helens with a soaking Cycle Challenge and Green Fayre at Sherdley Park.

But, despite the downpour, dozens of kids still turned up to enjoy a fun day out including an exciting menu of travel and environment-related activities.

The event was organised as part of Green Transport Month by Willowbrook Hospice (formerly St Helens and Knowsley Hospice) in partnership with Merseytravel, Travelwise and the Groundwork Trust. It reflects the growing consensus that a change in travel patterns is vital to protect people and the environment from pollution and congestion. Merseytravel and St Helens councillors, John Mealor and Terry Hanley, said they were working with the Willowbrook Hospice to make the links between health, the environment and transport.

"If we all left the car at home more often and enjoyed a more varied and healthy 'transport diet' by walking, cycling and using public transport more often, we would be doing ourselves a favour," said Councillor Mealor.

And Councillor Hanley commented: "It's up to us all to make the connections that will take us forward into a cleaner, healthier and sustainable future."
