FRANK Bibby won his first Mitsushiba Northern Merit tournament in sensational style when he captured the Royal Birkdale Silver Goblet.

Three adrift of Yorkshire pair Paul O'Donnel and John Wells after a first round 74, Bibby put himself back in contention with birdies on the 15th and 16th.

And the Wilmslow youngster, who broke through into the Cheshire county team last year, then eagled the final hole for a second round 71 over the tough Southport links to beat Richard Baird of Vicars Cross by virtue of a better final round score.

Merit leader Garry Boardman failed to pick up any points but neither did his nearest rivals so he remains 415 points ahead of Hillside's Mark Prue.
