NURSING sister Carol Taylor was greeted with bedpans instead of confetti when colleagues turned up in their uniforms to watch her wedding.

Staff from the children's medical unit at Queen's Park Hospital, Blackburn, sneaked out of St Paul's Church, Hoddlesden, at the end of the ceremony to create the eye-catching guard of honour.

"She thought it was hilarious," explained staff nurse Liz Rusyn. "Carol is renowned for her good sense of humour and we thought this would be a great way to surprise her on her big day."

Carol, 35, married butcher Justin Nixon, 28. The couple, from Darwen, held their reception at Whitehall Hotel and County Club, Darwen, and will honeymoon in Mexico.

The day went smoothly despite a last minute hiccup which threatened to leave the couple without wedding rings.

A pair of antique rings, sent off to be engraved through a jewellers were lost in the postal system. But the complication had a happy ended when Carol's mum, June, stepped in with her mother's wedding ring and Justin borrowed a ring for the day.

Mrs Taylor said: "Losing the rings was upsetting especially when the Royal Mail said just eight days before the wedding that we should make alternative arrangements.

"But they didn't let it spoil things and it was a wonderful day. Carol's grandma died earlier this year and so her ring is very special to us."

Carol added: "I couldn't believe it when I saw the bedpans.

"It was embarrassing but a really nice thing to do.

"I was hysterical at one point about the rings but on the day it felt right to be wearing my grandma's ring.""
