YOUNG home-maker Cathryn Morris could not believe her ears when she called for council workers to help dump her old wardrobes - only to be told the MFI units were the wrong style!

Cathryn and her fiance Stuart Hurst were busy preparing their home-to-be in Royshaw Avenue when they decided to take Blackburn with Darwen Council up on an offer to remove wardrobes and carpets free of charge.

But when the council workers turned up they told Miss Morris that they only removed free-standing-style wardrobes.

Miss Morris, 23, said: "I was just so shocked.

"I had originally contacted the council to ask about skip hire but was told that there was a free collection service for old bedroom furniture, carpets and so on.

"Of course we asked them to help and we dismantled the MFI wardrobes from three bedrooms and stacked them on the drive ready to be taken away.

"We also pulled up carpets and sealed up a number of bags of old wallpaper to be collected as well.

"We waited over a week for the council to come and then, when the workmen finally arrived, they said they didn't want the wardrobes because they were the wrong style - fitted rather than freestanding.

"I just can't believe they can say they will help one day and then say they won't the next."

A spokesman for the council said: "We have no problem removing flat-pack furniture for free but we had a problem with the sheer volume of wood which Miss Morris asked us to collect.

"We thought it constituted more than the usual amount of household items we would remove under our free scheme.

"However, we would be happy to return and take the carpets and bags of waste wallpaper."
