WHILE we respect the right of everyone to express an opinion, I must point out that the thoughts expressed by these letter writers represent a minority view.

By far the overwhelming majority of people we have spoken to are very much in favour of Blackburn with Darwen becoming a city.

We have received comments and representations from individuals, community groups and other organisations in the borough, all of whom are keen to see the success of our City Status bid. We have received support from local churches of all denominations, residents' groups, members of the ethnic minority community and local politicians of all persuasions.

I believe we have put together a quality bid, supported by the majority of the local population, which has every chance of succeeding.

PHIL WATSON, Chief Executive of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.
