PUPILS who gave up part of their holidays to attend two summer schools were rewarded for their efforts at a presentation.

Children who took part in the Gifted and Talented scheme and the summer literacy school at Blackburn Queen's Park High School in Shadsworth Road received certificates and prizes from school improvement officer Terry Wood and chairman of Blackburn with Darwen Council's education and training committee Coun Bill Taylor.

Headteacher Vicki Devonport said both the two-week summer schools had proved a huge success.

"The Gifted and Talented scheme was for pupils in year seven last term and included work across a range of subjects around a space theme. The children chosen to attend were already high achievers with great potential who we believed would benefit from extra stimulation and challenge," she explained.

"The summer literacy scheme involved 20 children who will start at the school this week and followed an autobiographical theme where children used their own experiences to write stories."
