WORRIED neighbours have objected to an ambitious scheme to convert a former school into a resource centre because they fear it will mean parking problems in the area.

Waterbridge Community Association applied for planning permission to convert Sacred Heart RC School, Rigby Street, Colne, into a centre to house a citizens advice bureau, a food co-operative, a credit union, a children's nursery, training rooms and offices.

The plans show the school yard would be used as a car park for 14 vehicles with three further spaces at the front of the building.

But a 12-name petition from residents of neighbouring Queen Street has been sent to Pendle Council opposing the scheme.

Local people are concerned there will not be enough off-road parking to serve the proposed centre which could lead to cars being parked in Queen Street, taking spaces from residents.

But a report by planning officer Chris Preston says: "The access and level of car parking are considered to be acceptable and adequate for the level of traffic which would be generated."

Mr Preston said a residents-only parking scheme could be considered in the future if parking becomes a problem.

The council's Colne area committee is recommended to grant planning permission for the resource centre tomorrow.
