EURO MP Brian Simpson is fighting to bring back Golborne's railway station.

One of 10 new NW representatives in Brussels, Brian hails from Holly Road, Golborne. And he is appealing to residents for their help to create new life in the centre.

He wants to see the station, closed under the Beeching axe in the 1960s, re-established next to the car park on Tanners Lane, helping regenerate the area. And he is urging people to write to the chairman of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, Atherton Cllr Joe Clarke.

In a recent letter to Mr Simpson, Cllr Clarke has promised to conduct a survey to guage whether people would use the station. He said: "I remember using Golborne station for the annual Sunday School trip to Southport, but now as we approach the Millennium I think it is ridiculous a town the size of Golborne does not have a station.

"Services could include links to Wigan and Warrington as well as Manchester and Liverpool, which at the moment are very difficult to reach by public transport.

"They would also encourage people to leave the car at home.

"I am delighted the GMPTA are interested enough in my idea to conduct a survey. What I would like now is the people of Golborne supporting me by writing to Cllr Clarke at GMPTA, PO Box 532, Town Hall, Manchester.

"I believe a new station would not only improve our transport links, but help to regenerate and bring more investment into the town.

"That means more jobs, a better town centre and more businesses willing to set up in Golborne itself. That can only be good for my home town community."
