A BATTLING performance at Chesterfield on Saturday (Oct 9) gave Blackpool their first away point of the season, with a 0-0 scoreline.

It may not have been enough to prevent Pool dropping to joint bottom of the division but Tangerine fans can gain heart from the team's performance.

They battled hard, showed spirit and played better than in any away game this season.

And it could have been so much better if they had not been denied what appeared a certain penalty 11 minutes from the end.

Phil Clarkson looked to be clearly pushed by David Reeves in the penalty area after getting on the end of a flick-on from Clarke Carlisle but the referee saw differently.

To be fair Chesterfield had the better chances in the match with Craig saving well from Reeves after just five minutes.

Blackpool created few chances in the first half until Ormerod's left foot shot in the 33rd minute forced Chesterfield keeper Gayle to make a fine save. The second half saw Clarkeson come close with a glancing header from a Bardsley free kick in the 54th minute.

Clarke Carlisle, who had an outstanding match was also unlucky to see a shot deflected wide.

Chesterfield had the better chances, though, with Reeves fluffing one shot from just six yards out and heading over the bar from close range two minutes later.

Commenting on the match, Nigel Worthington said: "This was a lot better performance and the lads worked well together as team not as individuals.

"Chesterfield had some chances which a week or ten days ago may have found the back of the net.

"Perhaps the luck was on our side in that respect but not with the penalty.

"This was a good solid performance and we got a good result.

"Now we have to keep that going in our next games by scoring some goals and keeping clean sheets."

On Saturday (Oct 16) the Seasiders entertain Bury at Bloomfield Road.
