TEACHERS were given an insight into how to teach a new set of the three Rs.

Recycle, repair and reduce were the main themes of an environmental workshop aimed at teachers and youth leaders who work with junior school age children.

The event, at Silverman Hall, Nelson, was organised by Community Action Network (CAN), a network of voluntary, community and education groups working to promote and enhance the environment.

CAN support worker, Helen Blyth, said: "We need to encourage children early on in life to recycle and to reduce our waste if we are to find an alternative to dumping waste in landfill sites.

"The afternoon provided information on how to look after our planet to ensure that it is sustained for future generations."

Although turnout at the event was disappointing organisers said they are pressing ahead to forge closer links with teachers by working with individual schools to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Specialists from various organisations including the Tidy Britain Group, Groundwork East Lancashire, Pendle Council, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency, were on hand to give out information. Resource packs and videos were also available together with information on how the recycling message fit into the National Curriculum.
