YOUNGSTERS at Blackbrook RC Primary have been getting their hands dirty for a good cause - by planting a memorial garden to the school's first-ever headteacher.

Sister Mary Winefride supervised the initial building and was head of the school from its opening in 1953 until her retirement in 1976 but was still a regular visitor at the school from her home at the neighbouring convent on Chain Lane.

Sadly, she passed away in March this year and the children were so upset that they decided to remember her by raising money to build the memorial garden within the school grounds. They also held a special service in her honour at St Mary's Immaculate Church next to the school.
