CHECK-OUT two enterprising staff at the busy Asda supermarket in Spring Street, Bury.

Marlene Cooke has helped boost morale among her fellow check-out operators by persuading the company to replace all existing tills.

And colleague Angela Hakin has been given the go-ahead by Asda bosses for the store to stock kitchen rolls, to correspond with customers' kitchen decors.

Both women were winners of a company in-house "Tell Archie" suggestion scheme.

Till operators at the Spring Street store will soon be able to check-out in style.

For the company has agreed to upgrade all check-out machines within the supermarket.

Marlene told "Archie", alas Asda chairman Archie Norman, that the existing tills within the supermarket were too old.

Not only that, she added, associated problems with the equipment meant it was getting harder to deal with the check-outs in the store.

Now, the Asda chief has taken note of team trainer Marlene's appeal for new machines.

All the tills will soon be up-graded to make them faster and easier to use for all the store's check-out operators. Marlene said: "I am delighted that my idea was implemented by the "Tell Archie" team.

"It's a brilliant scheme because it's open to all colleagues. We can all offer suggestions to help make Asda better.

"You feel you can contribute and be part of the business and you know your suggestion will be properly considered.

"And, if it helps the business, it will be taken up," continued Marlene.

Spring Street store manager, Louise Swift said: "This is good news for all the team here.

"'Tell Archie' is something we all support and it's great to have ideas generated from your own store."

The suggestion from Angela Hakin that customers should be able to purchase kitchen rolls to correspond with their kitchen decor was literally a "home grown" idea.

For Angela, supervisor in the store provisions department, came up with the suggestion when she was redecorating her own kitchen.

The "Tell Archie" scheme was set up in July 1993 and is the largest and most successful colleague suggestions scheme in the country.

Ideas are responded to individually and original suggestions are read and signed by Archie Norman.

Winning suggestions for improving the business are rewarded with "star points", the company's incentive scheme, which can be cashed in for gifts, treats and holidays.
