MP David Chaytor has welcomed plans to help poor people who face hardship because of huge water bills.

But he says the Government's proposals are just a step in the right direction, and much more needs to be done, especially on standing charges.

Two particular groups of people will be protected: families with three or more children who are getting benefits such as income support, housing benefit or working families tax credit; and people with certain medical conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis or kidney failure, who need to use a lot of water.

In both cases, bills will be held down the average level, no matter how much water is used.

"People should not be forced to put their health at risk because they can't afford to pay their water bill," said the MP for Bury North.

Mr Chaytor said he would continue his campaign to overhaul standing charges, not just for water but for gas, electricity and telephones.
