FAMILY Learning Weekend, a national event organised by the Campaign for Learning, has been hailed as a huge success in Bury.

A Family Learning Scheme display stand was set up at the Mill Gate shopping centre in the town centre to raise awareness of the critical role the family plays in learning.

There were opportunities for younger children to take part in "hands-on" learning activities with their families.

Information on how to support early learning and details of lifelong learning courses for adults were available.

And Bury Family Centre provided information about its parenting courses.

The Family Learning Scheme creates opportunities for parents and carers to find out how to support their children's learning through enjoyable everyday activities and to access progression routes to further education.

Elaine Peluch, family learning manager for Bury's lifelong learning service, said: "Hordes of families came to have a look at the stand and the day was a great success. We were absolutely exhausted at the end."
