MERSEYSIDE Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following explosions at two telephone boxes in St Helens causing £10,000 worth of damage.

The explosions, which allegedly involved powerful display fireworks, took place between 10.15pm and 11.30pm on Sunday, October 10, at a phone box in Common Road, Newton-le-Willows, and Concourse Way, Parr.

Fortunately there were no injuries, but there was extensive damage to both phone boxes.

Detective Sergeant Tony Dahill of St Helens CID, said: "We don't anticipate any further incidents of this nature, but people are advised to be aware of the danger following these incidents.

These fireworks are used for display purposes by big organisations and are very powerful, fortunately no-one was injured in either of these incidents, but the story could have been worse."

Debris from the phone boxes was blown 50 metres and hit some local houses.

Three people have been arrested and charged in connection with the explosions and will appear at St Helens Magistrates Court on November 8.

Anyone who may be able to help the police with their inquiries can contact St Helens CID on 0151 777 6061/6063, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
