HAVING accused farmers of being greedy and grasping, I would like to know if J Uttley (Letters, October 7) has any knowledge of the farming community.

Has he ever had to work a seven-day week, 52 weeks a year, I bet not?

As for subsidies, the Government has subsidised food prices for many years because people like him who shop at supermarkets and cheap cut-price stores that help dwindle the corner-shop trade.

Does he have a milkman? Remember not all milkmen are farmers, but I would imagine he would rather save a couple of pence and buy milk at a supermarket, rather than help an independent make a living.

Mr Uttley can come and put his nose in my trough anytime he likes - just as long as he is prepared to start at 3am and finish when I finish, sometime around 8pm. A knowledge of paper work would be appreciated; wellies will be provided - I do have some large sizes which will probably match his ego.

B THRELFALL (Mrs), Tottleworth Road, Rishton.
