I WRITE on behalf of the Burnley and District Writers' Circle regarding the lack of facilities at the town's central library for local groups to mark National Poetry Day on October 7.

Whereas we can appreciate that boards cannot always be available for everyone to display their work, we feel that an important literary day such as this should not be ignored.

Poetry is becoming more and more popular nowadays, with coverage in the press and on television, especially for Poetry Day. When I went into the library, I was dismayed to find there was nothing at all to mark it.

Surely, the central library should at least have put up some sort of display, whether it be from local groups or work from established poets.

Days like Poetry Day are designed to introduce people to something that they may not ordinarily have considered and if a local display encouraged just one person to enjoy poetry, then it must surely be worthwhile.
