TWO Blackpool schoolchildren have run away with prestigious awards for sporting excellence.

England international Ciaron Donnelley may be more used to celebrating after scoring a goal, but he is now rejoicing after netting the Quayle Trophy.

The Warbreck High School pupil was presented with the trophy by Blackpool Mayor Bill Burgess after representing England at Under-15 level.

But Ciaron said despite his performances on the pitch he didn't expect to win.

He said: "I was really surprised when I knew I had won. It was brilliant news. I played for England for the first time on Friday against Northern Ireland and I scored. Although it was a bit of a tap in I was really chuffed, especially as we went 1-0 down after 20 seconds." In addition, this year a new award for nine-13 year olds, the Quayle shield, was presented to St George's High School pupil Laura Deegan for her performances in cross-country and athletics events.

The Quayle Award young sportsman and sportswoman were boxer Brian Rose, of Collegiate High School, and Lisa Daly, a St Mary's High School athlete.

Quayle Shield awards of merit went to Dale Noble and Victoria Holden and certificates were also handed out to short-listed candidates

The 1999 Quayle Awards are run by Blackpool Council's department of education who have been receiving nominations since May this year.

Chair of the Quayle selection committee, Councillor Val Haynes, said: "I am delighted at the outstanding sporting talent among our young people, and all credit must go to them, their teachers and coaches for their very impressive performances."
