MAYORESS Councillor Evelyne Smith was officially installed as Mayor to succeed her late husband, Bill, at a special ceremony on Monday.
She was nominated by Cllrs Christine Hitchen and Susan Turner at a meeting in Wigan Town Hall. Her daughter, Elaine Stevenson, will accompany her as Mayoress.
Tributes to Cllr Bill Smith were paid by Cllrs Alan Stephenson and Bill Baldwin, Council Leader Lord Peter Smith and his deputy Cllr Tom Sherratt.
At the ceremony Cllr Sherratt also paid tribute to The Journal's "sensitive" reporting throughout the late Mayor's illness.
